Every new year at the Innovation Academy we focus on a big project that basically consumes the entire semester and school year. In 10th grade, for example, we constructed a business magazine to point out the principles in well structured companies. In 11th grade we worked together in small groups to develop an economics-related documentary that would allow us to connect our own interest based on topics studied in class. Finally, this last year in the IA we have been given the opportunity to start up a business in school; a project where one can experience entrepreneurship and bring value to the community.
Starting a business from scratch is a very challenging task to take on, every group member must be willing to give in their entire effort and dedication not only to become a successful business, but also a purposeful one. In every business there is a certain amount of tasks each person is assigned to take charge of, roles from marketing to finance where a lot of responsibility is needed in order to exceed the businesses's expectations. This later leads us to question having the right people on the bus.
To succeed in a business start-up we must ask: First who, then what. Where the initial step before delving further into the project is making sure you have employees capable of productivity and efficiency. Once this is taken care of, the business is well equipped to move forward.

After listening attentively to each business pitch delivered by my peers, I found myself truly interested and attached to one in particular: Breadz. Being this a simple, yet interesting business I was excited to see how it would turn out in the future; how dividing certain roles and connecting ones own interests within the group will benefit the general outcome of the project. Once I was sure I wanted to move along with this specific business idea, we got together and discussed our specific roles.
As I thought through what department I would take on in the business, I was eager to reach out of my comfort zone and try out something new. This lead me towards Operations and Logistics. Being a department fully dedicated in making things happen, I realized it was a perfect opportunity for me to exceed and develop skills such as productivity and leadership. This role will encourage me to show acts of discipline not only for the company, but for my own sake as well.
Even though I doubted taking this role initially, I am now excited to put my skills to the test. Being one who is shy and cautious when taking initiative, I believe this role will allow me to push down certain barriers that have been limiting me in going that extra mile.
Looking back at the various projects I have completed over the years in the IA, I must admit my lack of initiative when taking on specific tasks, this year however, I am looking forward in leaving those fears behind and making the best out of this final project. This change in discipline may be hard at first, but by dealing with it sooner than later I am confident in succeeding.
