Filming and producing a documentary that includes a wide range of store footage can turn out to be quite of a challenge. One who isn't as experienced and knowledgeable in the area of filming techniques can find it difficult to vary and produce unique shots within a limited space. Playing around with the usage of angles and scenes within a documentary is the key to producing a successful film that catches the eye of the viewer. Visual content is a crucial source that supports the main message being transmitted, however, the way in which this source is manipulated is also a prime factor.
For my documentary project I will be spending a great amount of time filming inside stores and boutiques. In order to get an idea of how to gather purposeful footage for this film, I took the time to watch a short documentary based on a small boutique and its characteristics. The documentary , Topshelf Boutique, includes unique editing and filming skills that generates excitement within the audience, "hooking" them with the story presented. Getting a glimpse of the different techniques they use, will then allow me to apply several ideas into my own film.
Manipulation of shots:
Throughout this mini documentary we see several shots that catch the attention of others, despite the lack of space or objects within the environment , the producer manages to include unique angles that give the film a sense of "personality". The variation between scenes is also a prime characteristic observed, from the usage of time lapse to close-up shots, all footage is balanced and distributed purposefully. The different techniques used when filming the clothing and accesories is the main factor I will be benefiting from. Due to the fact that my documentary consists on filming Kids Boutique products, I will now have a gained the necessary knowledge to apply these skills while gathering the footage.
Capturing "awe" moments:
Besides making your film visually appealing, reaching towards the audience emotionally also has the potential to make the film standout. Taking a look at this particular example, (Topshelf Boutique) we see the way the producer includes emotion, generating that “awe” feeling within the viewers. Telling a personal story by opening up to others creates a close bond between the documentary and the audience, leaving them with the desperation in wanting to know more. The Topshelf Boutique owner shares her background story before starting her business, by expressing her worries and hesitations about this company the audience was able to connect with this particular feeling. The way we can apply this into our own documentary is by sharing a certain anecdote or story about the Kids Store. Due to the fact that Kids is one of our main priorities in the film, we can add some sort of background info that in a way captures the audience’s interest.
Taking these techniques in much consideration, we can move forward with the creation of our Fast Fashion documentary, having now a clear idea of what to include and state. The specific strategies used while delivering the message is just as important as the content itself, meaning that we should consider unique alternatives while producing this documentary.
