This visit was the last visit of the year. Now working with kantaya for over 5 months I can see the great growth and changes these kids have shown throughout the semester. Each time I visit kantaya I am able to point out a specific improvement, either passion, knowledge and kindness, these children always seem to be growing in a positive way. For this visit we decided to bring out their creative side for a christmas spirit workshop. We divided the group in 3 different sections: tree ornaments, cookie decorations and soccer, where each student had the chance to choose the workshop that interested them the most. The workshops turned out great! The kids were entertained and enjoyed every second of their activity. Even though this year has come to an end, I am looking forward for the new visits and workshops to plan for the upcoming semester.
Today, at Kantaya, we celebrated “el dia del libro”. We divided the kantaya club in 5 groups, where each group a number of students and a few book was read to them. In order to show their comprehension of the book read, each group presented to the class, giving small details of what they learned and what were their main takeaways. The children were on task and passionate the entire lesson, asking questions, focused and entertained. It is always a pleasure to see their excitement and enthusiasm towards learning.
The kantaya kookie initiative was created to help out kantaya financially, where each cookie box sold would give 3 unprivileged kids a full day of quality education. Hours of baking and packaging were spent in order to complete the bakesale. Luckily all 35 boxes were sold and 105 kids at kantaya were provided with quality education.
Helping out at kantaya is always a blessing. Being able to share the simplest knowledge, yet still make a difference in someone's day is the greatest satisfaction. This month’s visit consisted on teaching the kids at Kantaya (in Ventanilla) basic english words and terms. Knowing that we come from an American school and have spoken english great part of our lives, we could easily teach this workshop with a strong advantage. The lesson was divided in four different sections, where the students would be separated in small groups and rotate between the lessons. The first lesson, the one I conducted, was animal names, the 2nd color names, the 3rd a writing short sentence in english and the 4th was teaching them a song. Teaching these unfortunate kids a fun and simple way to learn english allowed them to receive and take in the knowledge properly. Each visit to kantaya is a heart warming experience, the happiness and gratefulness portrayed in the children’s faces truly gives you that sense of satisfaction. Knowing that an act of kindness was completed makes others, and myself, eager to come back
