For this economics-based documentary I have decided to go towards the direction of clothing sales and how it has affected certain stores in their expectation of success. Knowing my own interests and strengths I choose to delve into the topic of fast fashion in our country. Clothing apparel has always been a passion of mine, so in a way producing this documentary will widen my knowledge and introduce me to a side of fashion I had never quite experienced. Within the documentary my partner and I have decided to focus on the comparison of a high quality national clothing line with a very well know fast fashion store, Forever 21. We have completed a well rounded background that will provide us the necessary insight in order to produce an informative and entertaining documentary to our audience.
This week, we took the time to gather some potencial material for our documentary. Since most of our film is based on certain stores and their products, we needed a great amount of footage in order have the sufficient B-rolls that purposefully conveys the content. Knowing this, we went to the Salaverry Mall, where both Kids and Forever 21 stores are located. As soon as we got there we tried our best in using our time wisely, getting a great load of footage and information for our documentary. The first store filmed was Kids, our main focus will shooting was proving our concept of the high quality clothing this store has, therefore we made sure we portrayed their shirts, jeans and blouses in a way that the audience could capture the idea clearly. We also tried are best in taking unique and visually appealing shots that will both entertain our audience and transmit our idea in a meaningful manner. On the other hand, gathering footage for Forever 21 was quite different. Due to the fact that we didn't have professional permission we had to be extra careful when shooting certain products, this made our experience there be somewhat of a challenge. For this store we used our iPhone 6 cameras as our source for gathering the footage, the idea we wanted to transmit from Forever 21 was their great amount of products within the store and how they don't necessarily view quality as their first priority.
Ending our visit I was able to conclude with a realization. Despite the great amount of research my partner and I had collected, it was the actual visit that gave us full insight on what we where looking for. Taking a look at numerous articles on fast fashion and how it has affected sales in different ways, only informed us about the general impact of these stores. On the other hand, physically observing their products and company function we were provided with the necessary information to proceed with the project. Physical contact such as comparing the materials of clothing either by feeling their texture or simply observing their visual characteristics, told us a lot about the quality of the brands. In terms of the environment, we recognized how spacious and accumulated stores approach differently towards the clients, changing the entire vibe and mood when shopping for clothes.
Realizing the great benefit we got out of this visit, made it clear that in order to get full insight on a specific topic it is necessary to get some type of "hands on" experience. This will allow your information gathered to be detailed and descriptive, providing an accurate display of data.
