A few months ago, I viewed my role in Special Tea as, “A piece of cake.”. In my eyes, joining an already settled and stabled business seemed no where near a challenge. But choosing to be part of the Operations and Logistics role seemed even easier. Why? Because the systems, the planning and the inventory were already established. Having Claudia by my side (previous Ops & Logs) was like having a personal reminder for what I needed to do; depending on these indications my day to day tasks where a breeze. However, as the business proceeded things began to change. Everyone was now focused on their own roles and occupations, I was no longer reminded of my tasks nor deadlines; I was lost and knew there needed to be a change.
Being now in complete control of my role, it was my duty to modify certain aspects to make this field my own. I triggered this mentality by changing certain systems; I first began with the pre-sale system. According to the data we had on sales, I arranged the amount of tea we would buy each week. Having a specific quantity when purchasing tea, helped us be more organized and simplified the procedure.
I intentionally adjusted another system for the pre-sale because I realized that the dedication put into each preparation is very time consuming. A proper system was needed. Taking in consideration our increase in cold tea sales, I decided to use the big water heater instead of the small one. This new procedure allowed me to make a greater amount of tea in a shorter amount of time increasing my productivity.
The experience of making a role “my own” influenced my ability to take initiative. To be completely honest, taking initiative and showing habits of leadership isn’t a strength of mine, and although there is still great room for improvement, I believe Special Tea has given me the tools to make this weakness strive. This business trusted that I was capable enough to work successfully without waiting for reminders. They pushed me to lead my own learning and this helped me be constantly motivated.
